Emergency Veterinary Field Hospital Opens at Grandview Arena in Thunder Bay
Northwestern Ontario is in the midst of a severe wildfire crisis, forcing communities to evacuate with little time to prepare. As evacuees arrive in Thunder Bay, many are bringing pets in urgent need of medical care. A volunteer-run veterinary field hospital has now been set up inside Grandview Arena, led by the Community Veterinarian Program in collaboration with the OSPCA.
The team drove up from just outside Toronto after receiving an emergency call for help — building a full check-in and exam setup inside the arena. In just hours, they’ve already treated more than 20 animals, with over 100 expected later in the day. Many pets are arriving stressed, anxious, missing medications, and facing issues like ear infections, paw injuries, and unknown vaccination histories.
This operation is entirely volunteer-run and unfunded, relying solely on donations to continue providing care during this wildfire emergency. Monetary donations can be made directly to CVP Port Perry or through their GoFundMe, linked on their Facebook page.
