Sault Ste. Marie City Council Seeks New Direction for Pointe des Chenes Campground

Pointe des Chenes Beach has now sat empty for more than five years, and the City of Sault Ste. Marie is once again restarting the process to figure out what comes next for the 28-acre waterfront property.

The former campground closed in 2021 after the Lions Club agreement ended, and efforts to find a new operator have fallen short.

Ten groups initially expressed interest in leasing the land, but only one proposal was submitted. That lone bid did not match the city’s vision for a family-friendly extension of the beach and day-park area, leaving the property without a clear future.

City staff will now begin developing a new draft plan, launch a public consultation process, and review environmental and infrastructure needs to determine what kinds of low-impact, affordable uses are possible. Ideas being explored include trail systems, boardwalk extensions, paddling and fishing amenities, and nature-based community spaces.

The city says any future development must be cost-effective and sustainable, with residents playing a major role in shaping the final plan.
